Club description

Saunton Golf Club is home to two of the great mature links golf courses of the World. The pair of Championship courses is located in the Braunton Burrows of North Devon less than ½ mile from the Atlantic Ocean set in the towering dunes that form the backdrop to their magnificent location. The basis for the present East Course was laid out under the direction of the renowned course architect W. Herbert Fowler in the 1920’s and so began the reputation as one of the finest links courses in the country.

Location: Braunton, North Devon, England
Year founded: 1897
Courses: East Course (6779 yards) & West Course (6403 yards)
Architect: Herbert Fowler (1919)

Signature Holes

Hole #1 - 478 yards par 4

A 5 will win the opening hole more times than not. Keep this in mind. The length of the opening hole demands a driver. Left of centre is ideal from the tee, as most of the trouble is on the right. There is a cross ditch, approximately 60 yards short of the green which is open outwards from the edge of the fairway on both sides. If this cannot be easily negotiated with the second, lay up to leave a comfortable approach shot.

Hole #18 - 408 yards par 4

Aim just inside the bunker line from the tee and trust your swing. The closing hole requires accuracy from tee to green. The bunkers on the left and "Isaac's" on the right are waiting to punish an errant tee shot. The slopes on the right encroach more towards the fairway than it seems from the tee. The green is well guarded by 5 bunkers with the 2 on the left being particularly penal. These need to be avoided.
